Floor Locks

Floor locks prevent portable equipment from shifting or creeping when in the locked position. Engaging the floor lock is accomplished by depressing the foot pedal. Depressing the kick bar releases or retracts the floor lock. For best results under most conditions, floor locks should be installed in pairs between swivel and rigid casters. It is possible to maintain adequate locking if mounted between two swivel casters.

The new RWM Adjustable Floor Lock eliminates the need to buy multiple locks for different carts. This lock can be applied to carts with wheels 6” to 8” in diameter. In addition to a foot-activated locking and unlocking mechanism, a rubber-bottom pad secures floor grip to lock the cart in place. This bottom pad rotates to allow the height of the floor lock to adjust up to 2¾”. A zinc-plated coating protects
from corrosion. By design, the adjustable floor lock is ideal for use on carts with different caster heights and stabilizes carts for loading and unloading by locking the cart while holding all wheels in position.

Industries

The versatility of floor locks means that they are used in a wide range of industries. Floor locks are frequently used in hospitals because they protect portable medical equipment from slippage that can cause injury to patients or damage sensitive instruments. They are used in warehouse operations to ensure carts and dollies don’t slip during loading/unloading operations. Likewise, floor locks are common fixtures on dollies and portable carts used within grocery stores and retail establishments.

Floor locks are popular across industries because they do not require additional hands to operate. A simple push of the foot is all it takes to engage the locking mechanism. Once locked, the friction created is sufficient to hold the unit in place. As a general rule, floor locks should only be utilized on level surfaces, which is why they are most commonly used for indoor applications.

Floor locks are effective at keeping carts and equipment from slipping, pivoting, and sliding. Mounting floor locks on platform trucks, fixture dollies, portable carts, and equipment stabilizes the unit. Once engaged, the floor lock transfers a significant portion of the cart or truck’s weight to the floor locks friction pad. This makes it an effective option that will protect against inventory loss and property damage.

Floor locks are a cost-effective solution that can be applied so long as you have sufficient space to mount the device. In most cases, it is a more efficient solution to immobilize mobile equipment than putting brakes on individual casters. Once bolted or welded to the cart, platform truck, etc., the floor lock will protect the loads being carried without causing damage to the floor.
